<image:caption>Back row L-R: Frank George Cundy, test driver for Napier Cars (seen in picture below driving a Napier in Romania). He married Lena Connell who then became known as Beatrice Cundy; 4th from left, a youthful Robert Speaight in a sailor suit, who became a prominent actor and writer. Front row L-R: Lena Connell, well-known artist and photographer was active in the Suffragette movement, painting its leading members – fourteen of these paintings are in the National Portrait Gallery archives; 5th from left Granny Cundy, her daughter Alice, a well-known miniaturist, married to Richard Speaight, and their son Richard Langford. Richard was a distinguished photographer with studios in Bond Street. He photographed the Royal family. This was taken in 1912 at the family home in Beaconsfield, Buckinghamshire - a moment of quiet before the world was turned upside down by the Great War.</image:caption>

      <image:title>Life in Quainton</image:title>
<image:caption>Quainton’s windmill was built in 1832. It is a fine imposing structure rising 70ft above the village and visible for many miles across the Vale of Aylesbury. But despite its impressive appearance it failed to catch the wind sufficiently and a steam engine was brought in to provide supplementary power. When we arrived in Quainton in the 1970s it had become a sad, derelict structure – one sail remained and elm trees had grown up around it. Eventually a determined effort was made to restore it. A team of volunteers worked tirelessly and eventually the sails began to turn and corn was once more ground and sold in the village store. Sadly, the timber used was not up to the task, it was found to be rotten and the mill was closed once more. Eventually funds were raised – mostly from Colin Dancer, the generous mill owner, and a group of professional millwrights joined the volunteers to complete the work. The timber headframe was replaced and, in 2019, new sails constructed using a giant crane. However, the machinery within the mill was still in working order. Standing within the mill when it is working is a great experience, it is almost as if it were a living creature. The building vibrates and the sails creak, a sound that carries though the village. The mill is open to visitors on Sundays. Photo credit: Bernard Hall</image:caption>

      <image:title>Growing Up</image:title>
<image:caption>Roderick Thomson died in December 2013 aged 75 as a result of complications following abdominal surgery. We and many of his great circle of friends attended his funeral in Yorkshire. It was a sad and sudden event and there was a deep sense of loss. He and I first met in 1957 as National Service recruits at the Black Watch Training Company at Perth. Compared with most of the other recruits who came from rural eastern Scotland, and from Glasgow, we were southerners. Also, Roderick had attended my father’s old school at Highgate. He was my most significant and valued friend. As a mark of his singularity he would go through cuttings from north London sent to him by his mother. He was perhaps more ill at ease than I in the rough of barrack life. He was not selected initially for officer training. I went off to Eaton Hall, and then back to Perth with a commission. Roderick followed and was later commissioned into the Royal Fusiliers. After service in East Africa he went to Camberwell School of Art. He progressed first to Unilever in London and from there to Bradford Grammar School where he taught English and Art. In these early years while we were in London we both married and met a great deal. But preoccupation with family life and careers gradually came between us. Sadly, I found Roderick increasingly difficult to relate to as a friend. He was by his own admission an ‘interrupter’, not through rudeness but as a result of an intense interest in life, and a sparkling intelligence. He was increasingly restless, seldom staying still for more than a few minutes. Roderick developed an unusual gait, slightly lop-sided with his left arm held behind his body, as a friend remarked, like the rudder of a boat as if to steer him through the vicissitudes of life. His circle of friends and supporters and societies was immense. It included the Victorian Society, Migration Watch, Prayer Book Society, English Officers Society. He was a strong traditional Anglican and, for a time, was a member of the Bradford Diocesan Synod. He regularly attended the Aldeburgh Festival. Despite his wide range of interests and restless nature he was the greatest and kindest of friends, always ready to give the wise advice and support. I would turn to him at times of difficulty, often through long telephone calls. He arranged introductions for me to meet leading figures in the north when I was thinking of applying for a public appointment and accompanied me to the meetings. Roderick and his wife Ursula had two boys, Duncan and James. Tragically, James developed muscular dystrophy and died at the age of 18. Duncan has settled down and has a large family. Roderick and Ursula’s marriage was tense and unhappy and ended in divorce. Angela McKenzie became his partner for the remainder of his life. A strong influence on Roderick was (later Sir) Kyffin Williams, his art teacher at Highgate. His interest in art only increased at Camberwell. He produced some fine works with bold colours and forms but he decided not to continue as an artist, a decision his friends at least regretted. But he continued to keep contact with Sir Kyffin and on one occasion took us to meet him at his cottage on the Anglesey shore of the Menai Straits.</image:caption>

William had moved to London trained as a chemist, became a brewer and dabbled in property and is believed to have set up the family printing and publishing business. He was described as a gentleman and commissioned the well-regarded artist, James Northcote RA, to paint this fine portrait.</image:caption>

      <image:title>Musical Brothers - Make it stand out</image:title>
<image:caption>This score of ‘The Lonely Shepherd’, the second and shortest piece of The Fairy Characters, is reproduced here by courtesy of the British Library. Margaret Hebblethwaite has been searching the archives for Joseph’s compositions and struck gold at the British Library. They have the scores of thirty-three of his works and allowed us to scan the score of The Fairy Characters, written for a string quartet (1st violin, 2nd violin, viola and cello). The Library has two recordings of this piece and is having them digitised. The copies will be made available to us. The Lonely Shepherd is the name of a walk in the Brecon Beacons. The walk passes through the Clydach Gorge and Shakespeare was so inspired by the mystical properties of the Gorge that it inspired him to write A Midsummer’s Night Dream.</image:caption>
